Luke… Our Big Ol’ Alpha Mastiff Is Not Well… We’re fighting to keep him around a while longer… Even though we’re used to the fact that the big dogs don’t live near as long as the little dogs…
We had to make a real tough decision with the vet… And I hate to reduce the years of devotion to its base finances… But it is what it is and no amount of money we throw at this problem will bring back health lost to old age.
So… We provide comfort and enough antibiotics to try and fight off the ravages of infection…
And we hope.

Just outside Butte, Montana lies a pit of greenish poison a mile and a half wide and over a third of a mile deep. The water became as acidic as lemon juice, creating a toxic brew of heavy metal poisons including arsenic, lead, and zinc. No fish live there, and no plants line the shores. There aren’t even any insects buzzing about. The Berkeley Pit had become one of the deadliest places on earth, too toxic even for microorganisms. Or so it was thought.
In 1995, an analytic chemist named William Chatham saw something unusual in the allegedly lifeless lake: a small clump of green slime floating on the water’s surface. He snagged a sample and brought it to biologist Grant Mitman at the nearby Montana Tech campus of the University of Montana, where Mitman found to his amazement that the goop was a mass of single-celled algae. This makes it a classic example of an extremophile.

Nautical engineers have long dreamed of a craft that could race across wave tops like a speedboat and seconds later dive beneath them like a submarine. But crossing the two breeds presents a catch-22: Subs need heft to sink, but speedboats need to be lightweight to go fast. With an investment of nearly $2 million and years of research, former auto-shop owner Reynolds Marion of Lake City, Florida, has finally hit on a solution, a machine he’s dubbed the Hyper-Submersible Powerboat. When complete, it will reach speeds of up to 45 mph and dive down to 1,200 feet.
